Iran truckers have started a fourth round of strike based on calls for a nationwide strike on November 1 which had circulated on social media websites.

Truckers are protesting low fares and promises that were not kept by the government, while also demanding the release of detained truckers who were arrested during the third round of strike when more than 200 truckers were arrested.

Reports indicate that until now, truckers in 10 regions in Iran have joined the strike.

Videos and images circulating on social media show empty highwaysin Najaf Abad, Shahroud, Asaloyeh and Shadgan.

The truck drivers’ strike has crippled all transportations in the country.

ILNA state-run News Agency reported today that poultry farms are also facing problems as a result of the ongoing strikes. According to the report, because truckers refuse to carry goods due to their outstanding problems, poultry farms, who have no chicken feed, are also facing severe shortages.

According to the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Egg Laying Hens Union of Tehran, due to the government refusing to solve the truckers’ problems, poultry farms and truckers have been forced into confrontations.

“There are lots of goods in the ports but not enough trucks to transfer them to factories,” he said.

The truckers’ strikes in Iran has drawn international support from the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) which represents 16.5 million transport workers in various transport sectors and Teamsters.

During the last round of strike which started on September 23 and continued for about 20 days, a court in Qazvin also called for the death penalty against 17 detained truckers in the province.

The ITF condemned the call for the death sentence against 17 truckers in Qazvin in a media release published on its website “in the strongest of terms”, while five major unions also condemned the calls in a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
