Iran’s Rajaie Shahr Prison in Karaj is around 20 kilometers west of the capital, Tehran. Political prisoners who are resistant and refuse to succumb to the regime are transferred to Rajaie Shahr, notorious for its poor conditions and brutal treatment of prisoners.
Human rights groups have published numerous reports of torture, rape and the overall poor treatment of non-political and political prisoners in Rajaie Shahr Prison in recent years.
According to our sources in Rajaie Shahr, prison officials systematically fabricate bogus charges against prisoners in order to get rid of them. These include hiring non-political prisoners to attack the prisoner in question. In this way, new charges are brought against the prisoner including engaging in violence. Other methods include planting narcotics in the prisoner’s clothes and belongings, providing easy access to narcotics to turn prisoners into addicts, forcing the prisoner to commit suicide or providing the grounds for suicide, and in general, getting rid of the prisoner in any way possible.
According to our sources, forced suicides are usually carried out after midnight or during early morning hours in solitary halls. During this time, the prisoner is given narcotics and large doses of methadone and is then hanged in suicide style. The cause of death is recorded as suicide in his death certificate and the case is closed.
One of the officials linked to Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence at Rajaie Shahr Prison’s Section 8, called Mahrami in prison, is known for brutally torturing political prisoners.
He was transferred to Rajaie Shahr around two years ago from Evin Prison’s section 209 run by the Ministry of Intelligence.
While in 209, Mahrami spiked the tea given to political prisoners before their interrogations with narcotics, making them extremely nauseous. This was an attempt to render them more agreeable to the interrogators demands.
Mahrami is now the middleman between the Ministry of Intelligence and political prisoners at Rajaie Shahr Prison. He is a hardliner and a fierce supporter of the regime’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
To him, all political prisoners are traitors and infidels. He has been quoted as telling political prisoners that they should all be “tortured to death”.
During nationwide protests in November 2019, detained protesters who were arrested in Alborz Province were transferred to Section 8 where they were tortured and beaten by prison guards and Mahrami.
