As Iranians struggle to make ends meet under a regime that spends millions on suppressing dissent and fueling proxy wars, an increased number of women have resorted to self-immolation as the only way out of poverty. A member of Iran’s Majlis (parliament) representing the province of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad in southwestern Iran said today that poverty was the main reason behind the high rate of women’s self-immolations in Dehdasht, a city in the province.
“A family has five or six educated young people but there are no jobs for them,” Adl Hashemipour said in an interview with state-run media.
The MP said that livelihood conditions put so much pressure on residents of Dehdasht, that they” preferred death”.
According to Hashemipour. the people in the region are extremely deprived and lack basic infrastructure.
Gas lines were just recently installed after 40 years under the current clerical regime.
“The youth in this region suffer from unemployment,” the Majlis MP said adding that 52% of the population get government help.
Before this, in just one day on September 30, there were three women’s self-immolations and two suicides by men due to poverty.
According to the report, two women in the western province of Kermanshah self-immolated while a man in the same province jumped to his death off the roof of a building. A woman in Ahvaz and a man in Kermanshah also self-immolated on the same day.
