Iranian immunology expert criticizes regime for not buying COVID-19 vaccine

Iran COVID-19

An Iranian immunology expert criticized the regime yesterday for not buying the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Timely vaccination is the most effective and decisive method to end the mass killings of helpless people, and to create herd immunity. It must be bought immediately,” Dr. Mostafa Moein, the Head of the Immunology, Asthma and Allergies Research Center in Tehran’s Medical Sciences University wrote in his Instagram page.

According to the state-run IRNA News Agency, Dr. Moein said about 80 countries have bought 7 billion doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

“Even countries such as Ecuador, Panama, Kazakhstan, and Venezuela have bought it,” he added.

“In countries south of the Persian Gulf, vaccination has started. Canada has bought vaccine doses five times its current population,” he said.

The Doctor said, “Some Iranian officials have stated that US sanctions prevent the purchase of US made vaccines but the Covax global vaccine program said there is no legal ban for Iran to procure the vaccine.”

“State officials should be more considerate and more accountable for Iranians’ rights, especially their right to health”.

Dr. Moein said a standard vaccine and not necessarily a US made vaccine should be purchased by Iran as soon as possible adding the regime had to be honest and transparent in announcing who would first receive the vaccine.

On December 19, the Head of Iran’s Drug Importers Union denied recent statements by Iran’s President Rouhani about problems in transferring money for COVID-19 vaccine purchases due to sanctions. This comes while the Head of Iran’s Parliamentary Health Commission said not even a dollar had been allocated for the purchase and import of the COVID-19 vaccine by the government.

In an interview with a state-run daily, Naser Riahi said money could be transferred for the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines.

“We are currently importing the country’s pharmaceutical needs in a variety of ways. We even have transactions with US and European pharmaceutical companies, as well as raw materials from India, China, and Russia. Money is being transferred in all these transactions,” Riahi told Sepid Daily.
