Iran has claimed that it is able to and would like to provide all of Syria’s food requirements.
The Chairman of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee said that Iran could provide all of Syria’s requirements via its different manufacturing groups if the payment and shipping methods were announced to the Chamber.
“In the first eight months of this year, around 3,000 tons of agricultural products and foodstuff worth around $9,000 were exported to Syria, which is not satisfactory as we are able to produce more than this,” Kaveh Zargaran said.
He claimed that Iran would be able to supply all the requirements of Syria’s food industry.
Earlier, the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce said that the Chamber had established a department two years ago for reconstruction in Syria including in the field of technical, engineering, electrical, industrial and agricultural services.
Various Iranian government departments are declaring their readiness to participate in the reconstruction or assistance to Syria while state-run media and Iranian parliamentarians talk of an economic crisis. They say that the increase of food prices has made it impossible for some Iranians to provide their minimum nutritional needs.
Various sectors of the society including workers, farmers, teachers, and pensioners have also taken to the streets in protest to inflation and their dire livelihood conditions.
According to Iran’s Central Bank, the price of food and beverages has increased by 60% with Iran losing its ability to produce enough food for everyone.
Rice, Iran’s staple food produced domestically in the north, has turned into a rare commodity for ordinary Iranians.
According to a report by the state-run ILNA news agency, rice productions have decreased due to continuous droughts. Only two provinces have the right to produce rice in Iran despite not being able to produce the annual 3 million ton requirement of the whole country.
At a time when domestic food manufacturers are suffering and food prices are soaring, Iran’s readiness to provide “all the food requirements” of Syria is hardly believable and will result in the wrath the 80% of Iranians living under the line of poverty.
