Following Facebook shout 652 Iran-backed recent days accounts linked in the global disinformation campaign, Google on Thursday said it has deleted 58 accounts linked to Iran for coordinated, state-sponsored efforts to spread misinformation on its platforms, including YouTube.
According to the public news, Google identified and deleted 39 YouTube channels, six Blogger accounts and 13 Google+ accounts that were sharing English-language political content in the U.S. while masking ties to Iran’s sole radio and TV broadcaster.
The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting is a state-run organization which plays a significant role to malice and hostility toward West and United State during the 40 years ago.
Connections to IRIB
Google’s senior vice president of global affairs, Kent Walker explain their technical research by saying:
We have identified evidence that these actors are associated with the IRIB, the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting.
We can’t go into all the technical details without giving away information that would be helpful to others seeking to abuse our platforms, but we have observed the following:
Technical data associated with these actors is strongly linked to the official IRIB IP address space.
Account metadata and subscriber information associated with these actors is strongly linked to the corresponding information associated with the IRIB, indicating common ownership and control.
Kent Walker continues to explain why they regularly sent warnings to Gmail users about phishing attempts coming from Iran.
He said:” We detected and warned users about a covert man-in-the-middle security attack in Iran in 2011 and we uncovered and warned users about politically-motivated phishing in Iran in 2013.”
