The Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Labor Union reported this morning that the detained former head of the union was taken to the hospital due to his deteriorating health in prison.
The union said that Ali Nejati, who was detained by security forces in his home in late November, had been under interrogations and subjected to pressure.
Ali Nejati was taken to the Ahvaz Baghaie Hospital yesterday due to the deterioration of his health and heart complications.
Judicial officials initially claimed that he was arrested in relation to his previous sentence but later said that his arrest was linked to the weeks long Haft Tappeh Sugarcane workers’ strike in Shush.
This is while according to the Haft Tappeh Union, Mr. Nejati is retired, lives in another city and was under medical treatment.
He is suffering from various ailments including heart problems and a prolonged detention can have dire health consequences and might even endanger his life.
Yesterday, a British trade union federation called for the immediate release of labor activist in a tweet.
“Although our brother Esmail Bakhshi a Haft Tapeh Sugarcane worker was released from Iranian prison yesterday on a heavy bail. The TUC still demands Iranian authorities immediately release & drops charges on Ali Najati, Sepideh Gholian & all imprisoned workers in Iran,” the Trades Union Congress (TUC) tweeted.
According to Wikipedia, the TUC is a federation of trade unions in England and Wales, with 50 affiliated unions, and a total of about 5.6 million members.
