Iran’s Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, announced his resignation in an Instagram post on February 25.
His resignation drew international reactions including that of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who called Zarif and Iran’s President Rouhani, “just front men for a corrupt religious mafia”.
“We note @JZarif’s resignation. We’ll see if it sticks. Either way, he and @HassanRouhani are just front men for a corrupt religious mafia. We know @khamenei_ir makes all final decisions. Our policy is unchanged—the regime must behave like a normal country and respect its people,” he wrote.
In the past months, Iranian media had made numerous speculations on Zarif’s resignations which were all put aside as “just rumors”.
Many believe that Zarif’s resignation signals critical disagreements among top officials in Iran and the government’s many crises that are plaguing the whole regime. The fact is that the US’s robust policy against Iran has taken its toll on Iran’s failed foreign policy as Zarif’s only “achievement” during his 5 year tenure was the JCPOA which has turned into a corpse thanks to the Trump administration.
Zarif’s resignation has nudged the regime deeper into crises with some officials pleading with him to come back.
Iran’s Minister of Communication and Technology asked Zarif to retake his post adding that “people were worried” in an Instagram post.
“Don’t sit brother, stand up dear Javad! The people are worried,” Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi wrote with an image of himself hand in hand with a smiling Zarif.
The head of the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign-policy committee, Heshmatollah Falahat-Pisheh also said that Zarif’s resignation had to be urgently seen to in an emergency meeting of the committee.
In an article titled “The Supreme Leader’s interpretations of Zarif” the ISNA state-run news agency listed Khamenei’s praises of Zarif over the years attempting to show that there were no internal disagreements between the two.
According to ISNA, Khamenei had described Zarif as “the child of the revolution, trustworthy, brave and devout, tireless, and responsible” which proves once again that as Secretary Pompeo said, Zarif is a just front and “Khamenei makes all final decisions”.
